The Umi-bōzu is a gigantic sea spirit from Japanese folklore, feared by sailors for emerging suddenly from calm waters to destroy ships and drown entire crews. Often appearing as a towering shadowy figure with a smooth bald head rising from the ocean mist, the creature was said to form during storms or moments of unnatural silence at sea. Legends claimed the Umi-bōzu demanded barrels or offerings from terrified sailors before capsizing their vessels and dragging them into the depths below.
